40 Foot Shipping Containers

Twice the floor for nowhere near twice the money — a used 40ft often lands within a few hundred dollars of a used 20ft per unit, which makes it the cheapest steel per square metre you can buy. The catch is never the price. It is the delivery.

Cargo-worthy used 40ft units — checked wind and watertight — start from $2,600 and new single-trip from $5,500. Guide prices, ex GST.

Grades matter more than anything else in a container quote. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we tell you exactly what is wrong with one rather than let you find it on delivery day. New single-trip units are sealed, unmarked and have made one loaded voyage. If the container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.

What is actually true about a 40ft

The best value per cubic metre of any size, by a wide margin, if the site suits it.

Needs a side loader or a crane truck rather than a tilt-tray. That changes what the site has to provide and it changes the cartage.

A side loader places the container to one side of the truck, and on nearly every unit in the Australian fleet that is the driver's side. You need roughly 4m of clear working width on that side and about 30m of length, on ground firm enough to take the stabiliser legs.

The thing to watch

The single most common 40ft disappointment has nothing to do with the container. It is a site that suits a 40ft perfectly except that the only clear space is on the wrong side of the truck. Tell us which side the container has to end up on before we quote and we will tell you honestly whether it is a side loader job, a crane job, or two 20ft units instead.

40ft questions

How much is a 40ft shipping container?

Cargo-worthy used 40ft units — checked wind and watertight — start from $2,600 and new single-trip from $5,500. Guide prices, ex GST. The delivered figure depends on the grade and the cartage to your address, and we quote both together.

What are the 40ft internal dimensions?

Internally 12.03m × 2.35m × 2.39m with a door opening of 2.34m × 2.28m, giving about 67.7m³. Externally 12.19m × 2.44m × 2.59m. Tare weight is approx 3,800 kg.

What does a 40ft need for delivery?

Needs a side loader or a crane truck rather than a tilt-tray. That changes what the site has to provide and it changes the cartage.

Can I hire a 40ft instead of buying?

Hire on 40ft units depends on what is available at the time rather than being a standing rate, so ring and ask. As a rule of thumb, under a year hire tends to win and over two years buying tends to.
