In Busselton’s established suburbs such as West Busselton, Geographe and Broadwater, most blocks are flat with room beside the house. In Dunsborough, Quindalup and Eagle Bay, lots are often bushier, driveways wind, and peppermint trees crowd the drive. Low branches are one of the most common reasons a 20ft cannot reach the spot planned for it.

If you own a holiday let, remember that a container on the driveway may block a guest’s car or the cleaner’s access. Agree the position with your property manager, and make sure someone can meet the driver or leave clear instructions about where the container goes.

Bushfire prone areas and planning

Large parts of the Capes region are designated bushfire prone under the state’s bushfire planning framework. That can affect which planning and building rules apply to a structure, and a container that stays for good may be treated differently from one hired for a few months. Ask the City of Busselton or the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River how the rules apply to your site before placing a long-term container.

A steel container is not a bushfire shelter and should never be treated as one. Keep the ground around it clear of leaf litter and dry fuel, as you would around any shed, and do not keep fuel or gas bottles in it unless it is set up for that purpose.

Wineries, breweries and hospitality

The region’s wineries, breweries, restaurants and function venues use containers for dry goods, equipment, marquee gear and furniture between events. On rural-zoned land, check with the council whether a container counts as an outbuilding and whether setbacks from boundaries or the road apply. On vineyard tracks, a truck needs firm, reasonably level ground; wet winter soil between the rows is no place for a loaded tilt-tray.

Temperature matters for anything consumable. A steel box in summer sun gets hot inside, so a standard container is better for equipment and packaging than for wine or food stock unless it is shaded and ventilated. Plain storage containers are not temperature controlled.

Surf, triathlon and festival events

Major events such as the Busselton Ironman, the surfing contests near Margaret River and the food and wine festivals through the year rely on temporary storage for equipment, timing gear, merchandise and bar stock. Organisers usually need sign-off from the land manager, which may be the council, a state agency or a private landholder, and the truck route and position need agreeing with them.

Foreshore parks and coastal reserves often have soft sand or turf, and bollards or narrow paths may limit truck access. Walk the route with the event’s site manager and send us a marked-up map. The delivery date is confirmed when you order, so share your bump-in date early.

Builders and trades across the Capes

Construction runs steadily across the region, from new homes in Vasse and Yalyalup to renovations of older beach houses in Dunsborough. A hired container on site gives trades somewhere to lock tools and materials overnight, which matters on sites that can sit quiet between trades. Agree the position with the builder and keep it clear of the future driveway.

Salt air along Geographe Bay and the ocean coast is hard on steel. For a longer build, check the hinges and seals now and then. For long-term storage, a new single-trip container starts with better paint.

Town-centre and light industrial businesses

Businesses in the Busselton town centre and the light industrial areas at Busselton and Dunsborough use containers for stock, tools and equipment. Seasonal operators such as hire shops, surf schools and caterers often need extra room ahead of the busy summer and can hand it back afterwards, which is exactly what hire is for.

In a shared industrial yard, agree the position with the landlord and neighbours, and face the doors towards where the work happens. A container sitting in a marked bay can leave a tenancy short of its approved parking.
