Mining contractors and site storage

Containers on mine sites and in contractors’ yards hold tools, spares and consumables, and some are fitted out as small workshops. Mine sites have strict access rules: inductions, escorts, vehicle requirements and set delivery points. If the container is going onto a lease, tell us the site contact and requirements up front so the transport can be arranged to match.

Many contractors want a container placed at their yard in town and moved out to a site later. Check that the yard layout will let a truck pick it up again, and that nothing will be built or parked around it in the meantime.

West Kalgoorlie and business yards

West Kalgoorlie is the main industrial area, home to engineering, transport and mining services businesses. Yards are usually flat and gravelled, which suits a truck. The questions are where the container sits relative to forklifts, fuel storage and loading areas, and whether the lease or site plan allows it.

For businesses storing stock, keep the doors facing the working area with room to open them fully. Red dust gets into everything, so check the door seals and sweep out the floor regularly to keep stored goods clean.

Heat, dust and what goes inside

Goldfields summers are hot, and a steel container in full sun gets much hotter inside than the air around it. For tools and equipment that is usually fine. For paints, adhesives, batteries or anything heat-sensitive, check the manufacturer’s storage guidance and think about shade and ventilation.

Storms are occasional but can be heavy, and water sheets quickly across hard ground. Keep the container off low spots. A cargo-worthy or new single-trip container is sold wind and watertight from above, but water running along the ground can still get in at the doors. As-is units are not sold watertight.

Homes, heritage streets and the verge

Many older homes in Kalgoorlie and Boulder have wide frontages and room beside the house, so a 20ft fits more easily than in most cities. Parts of the historic town centres carry heritage protection, so if a container would be visible from the street near Hannan Street or Burt Street, check with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder first.

If the verge is the only option, the City manages it and should be asked. Tell them how long the container will stay, and make sure footpaths and sight lines stay clear.

Clubs, racing and community events

Racing carnivals, sporting clubs and community events use containers to keep equipment and supplies between seasons. On council reserves or shared grounds, the land manager needs to agree the position and the truck route. Hard, dry ground is the norm here, but check for soft patches near irrigated ovals.

Trades and shops in town

Electricians, plumbers, mechanics and other trades in Kalgoorlie often need lockable storage at home or at a small yard. Check with the City whether a container on a residential lot used for business storage fits your zoning, and keep it tidy and clear of the neighbours’ fences.

Retail businesses along Hannan Street and in Boulder use containers for overflow stock, usually in rear yards or service lanes. Check the lane width and any overhead power before booking, since some of the older lanes are narrower than the main streets suggest.

Moving to or from the Goldfields

People move in and out of Kalgoorlie with work. A container can hold household goods while you sort out a rental, or between one house and the next. Hire suits a short stay; buying makes more sense for longer-term use.
