Long driveways and the wet

Many driveways in the rural area are gravel or dirt, some of them hundreds of metres long, and some cross low ground that holds water in the wet season. A driveway that is firm in the dry can become impassable for a loaded truck after heavy rain. Tell us the surface, any low spots or crossings, and how it has held up in past wet seasons.

If the spot is off the driveway on grass, plan for the dry season or pick a position near firm, well-drained ground. Keep the container off low areas where water sits after storms; surface water can get in at the door seals even on a container sold wind and watertight.

Home businesses and trades

The rural area has plenty of people running a business from home: mechanics, builders, landscapers, electricians and more. A container gives them lockable storage for tools and stock. Business use on rural land may be subject to planning rules, so check with Litchfield Council and the NT planning system before setting up a permanent store.

Place the container close to where you work, with room for the doors to open and a vehicle to back up. On a big block, think about security too: a container near the house is easier to keep an eye on than one at the back fence. The security guide covers lock options.

Horticulture, nurseries and farms

Mango orchards, nurseries, vegetable growers and small livestock properties across the area use containers for packing materials, irrigation parts, fertiliser and tools. Access is often along farm tracks, and a loaded truck needs firm, reasonably level ground. Send photos of the gate, the track and the spot.

If you are storing fertilisers or chemicals, ask about a dangerous-goods container and check storage requirements with your supplier. Keep heat in mind for anything sensitive, because a steel container gets very hot in the Top End sun.

Coolalinga and Humpty Doo commercial areas

Shops and service businesses in the Coolalinga and Humpty Doo centres use containers for overflow stock and equipment. Check your lease, and make sure the container does not take parking spaces your approval depends on.

For businesses on larger lots along the Stuart Highway or the Arnhem Highway, agree the position with the landlord and keep the truck route clear of customer parking.

Events and community groups

The Freds Pass reserve at Humpty Doo hosts sport and community events, and clubs, schools and community groups across the rural area use containers to store equipment. On reserve land, the land manager needs to agree the position and truck route. Grassed areas can be soft in the wet, so plan placement around that.

Cyclones and approvals

The rural area is cyclone country. Whether a container needs anchoring depends on the site and its use, so ask a building certifier or engineer. For verges and local roads, contact Litchfield Council; for planning and building questions, a certifier is the right starting point.

Sheds, workshops and storage on acreage

Most rural blocks have a shed, but sheds fill up fast. A container adds lockable space for tools, the ride-on mower, camping gear or stock without building another shed. Place it near the shed or house on firm ground, and leave room for the doors to swing fully.

If you plan to roof the space between two containers or fit one out as a workshop, that is building work rather than storage, so talk to a certifier before you start.
