Most of the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area is straightforward tilt-tray country — decent frontages, level streets, real side access. Three areas complicate it. The tight inner suburbs — Cooks Hill, Bar Beach, Hamilton, Islington and much of Merewether — have terrace-style frontages, parking on both sides and mature street trees, which turns a lot of jobs into crane truck jobs. The coastal ground from Stockton through Fern Bay and up to Anna Bay is sand, with the usual consequence for anything set straight onto it. And the Hunter Valley proper is farm access: long unsealed driveways, a gate that was built for a ute and grids that a loaded side loader has no business crossing. Farm and vineyard deliveries in the Hunter
A large share of what we send into the Hunter goes past the house rather than to it. The practical questions are always the same three: how wide is the gate, what is the grid rated at, and what happens to that track after fifty millimetres of rain.
A loaded tilt-tray carrying a 20ft is a serious weight on an unsealed surface, and a side loader placing a 40ft has to put four stabiliser legs onto ground that will hold them. Neither is a problem on a dry, formed track. Both are a problem on a soft one, and the failure mode is a truck bogged in your paddock rather than a container in the wrong spot. If the weather has been wet, ring and move the date. It costs nothing and it saves a very bad afternoon.
Buying near the water
Stockton, Newcastle East, Merewether and the whole Lake Macquarie foreshore are salt-air environments, and a used container will show it at the door hinges and the bottom rail first.
That does not mean buying new. It means being specific about grade. A cargo-worthy unit that has been checked wind and watertight will do years of service on the coast; an as-is unit already carrying surface rust will deteriorate faster here than it would at Singleton. Usually, with a crane truck. Those streets have narrow frontages, cars both sides and street trees over the road, which is exactly the situation a tilt-tray cannot work in and a crane truck can.
